About the Project

i—LAND, a new multimedia collaboration between choreographer Li Chiao-Ping and visual artist Douglas Rosenberg, examines and explores the immigrant experience. Who claims and controls the land and who decides who belongs? Focusing mainly on two main ports of entry into the United States—Angel Island and Ellis Island—Li and Rosenberg plan to interweave spoken text, Rosenberg’s poignant visual design, and Li's signature inventive and evocative movement to engage with stories of immigrants from the late 1800s to present-day. Li, a first-generation Chinese-American, will fold in personal history as well as stories about incarcerations at Angel Island, internment camps, and refugee camps, raising questions of identity, home, place, ownership, and power. This evening-length work will premiere at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, WI in March 2017.
