About the Project

Brooklyn Youth Chorus is pleased to introduce Silent Voices, a major new contemporary music project to premiere during the Chorus’s 2016-17 / 25th anniversary season. Continuing and expanding their role as an innovative commissioner and performer of original choral music, Brooklyn Youth Chorus is curating a year-long project featuring a series of extraordinary live theater and radio performances.

Silent Voices is designed to give voice to those who have been silenced or marginalized by cultural, social, ethnic or religious circumstances. The project will be presented in major NYC venues and will focus on issues particularly relevant to young people in our time—race, gender, sexuality, inequity and social disparity—enhancing knowledge and challenging attitudes by bringing heretofore unspoken narratives of empowering transformation to the stage.

Drawing on the rich personal stories of their own community, cultural icons and historical figures, BYC hopes Silent Voices will inspire performers and audiences alike with songs and stories interpreted through the visions of innovative contemporary artists and composers. Text and stories will be drawn from original writings, interviews, radio archives, historical texts, and material generated from story slams hosted with The Moth and workshops with Speak Truth To Power, a human rights education program.
