About the Project

Atlanta's Buford Highway Corridor is a multiethnic community of over 50,000 residents that contains a diverse, largely immigrant population of individuals of Latin, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, South Asian, Central American, Somali, and Ethiopian heritage. In a time of increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions, Scenes of Buford Highway reminds us that "these immigrants" are actual people with families and stories, who contribute to our communities, who help define our city, and who help us expand our notions of who we are and who we can be. The intention of this project is to collaborate with members of the Buford Highway community to develop a community-engaged performance piece that reflects the shared, daily experiences of individuals who live and work here.

Through partnership in/with community members and organizations, the Alliance will stage a site-specific theater performance in one of the Corridor’s numerous strip malls that reflects the diverse voices and stories of this community in an effort to explore and challenge the cultural and economic conditions that both unite and divide us. The Alliance's Teen Ensemble will also participate in the artist workshops that will generate the project's final script and perform alongside the Buford Highway community in the final performance piece. This project will come at the beginning of the Alliance’s unprecedented off-site season, where we will celebrate our city by staging our 12 season productions in 12 distinct venues throughout metro-Atlanta with the intention of meaningfully engaging areas of our community that we do not currently serve.
